Man sentenced for unlawful possession of loaded rifle in Sussex County

MORRISTOWN, NJ (Morris County) – A New York man was sentenced to prison for unlawful possession of a loaded rifle in Frankford Township, according to Acting Sussex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray.

Michael J. Stuhler, 35, of Chester, NY was sentenced before the Honorable Stuart A. Minkowitz, A.J.S.C. at the Morris County Courthouse in Morristown on March 19, Murray said.

Stuhler was sentenced to three years state prison with a mandatory period of parole ineligibility of one year, with a credit for 160 days jail already served. He must submit a DNA sample and pay $155 in mandatory fees and penalties, Murray said.

Stuhler pled guilty to third-degree unlawful possession of a loaded rifle and in pleading guilty, he admitted to possessing a loaded rifle under unlawful circumstances on May 31, 2023, namely by being an accomplice to another individual who transported, possessed and sold illegal manufactured firearms, Murray said.

The charge resulted from an investigation undertaken by the New Jersey State Police.

Stuhler was represented by Christopher Eaton, Esq., and the State was represented by Special Deputy Attorney General and Acting Assistant Prosecutor Jerome Neidhardt.
