Morris County Sheriff’s Office promotes two officers
MORRISTOWN, N.J. (Morris County) — The Morris County Sheriff’s Office recognized two members of its Bureau of Law Enforcement during a promotion ceremony held Thursday in the historic courtroom at the Morris County Superior Courthouse.
Sheriff James M. Gannon presided over the ceremony, during which Detective Lieutenant David Kenny and Sergeant Joseph McGee were formally sworn in to their new ranks.
Kenny began his career with the Morris County Sheriff’s Office in July 2001 after graduating from the 58th Basic Police Class of the Morris County Police Academy. He initially served in the Protective Services Division before transferring to the Warrants Section in 2006, where he was assigned the title of detective.
Over the years, Kenny has held a variety of specialized and leadership roles. He was selected as assistant terminal agency coordinator in 2010 and became the information security representative for the Administrative Office of the Courts and New Jersey Courts system in 2011. In 2014, he was promoted to detective corporal and appointed terminal agency coordinator for the Bureau of Law Enforcement.
Kenny later served in the Professional Standards Unit, conducting internal affairs investigations and assisting with administrative responsibilities. He also completed the Northwestern University Basic Police Motorcycle Operator School and was selected to oversee the Sheriff’s Office Motor Unit, a joint operation involving both the Bureau of Corrections and the Bureau of Law Enforcement. He was promoted to detective sergeant in 2020 and later assigned to oversee the Community Outreach and Planning Section until late 2022.
McGee joined the Morris County Sheriff’s Office in 2017 after working for the Parsippany Department of Public Works and his family’s construction business. He graduated from the Morris County Police Academy’s 89th class and currently serves in the Protective Services Division, Court Services, where he is assigned to the Morris County Superior Courthouse.
McGee was promoted to corporal in 2025 and has completed additional training in areas including basic drug recognition and gang affiliations. He has also served as vice president of PBA Local 151.
