Morris County surrogate marks nation’s 250th anniversary with Independence Day message
MORRISTOWN, N.J. (Morris County) — Morris County Surrogate Heather J. Darling is recognizing the nation’s 250th anniversary, highlighting Morris County’s role in the American Revolution and the Surrogate’s Court’s longstanding service to residents.
As the nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, Darling noted that Morristown twice served as Gen. George Washington’s military headquarters during the Revolutionary War.
“Two hundred fifty years ago, the men and women of this region helped carry a fragile idea through its hardest test,” said Surrogate Darling. “As stewards of the county’s oldest court, established to protect families and preserve the rule of law, we take particular pride in celebrating this milestone here in Morris County, where that history was made.”
According to the Morris County Surrogate’s Office, the Surrogate’s Court is New Jersey’s oldest constitutional office and has served county residents since the state’s earliest days by overseeing the probate of wills, administration of estates and appointment of guardians.
The office said its work reflects a tradition of public service that dates back to the nation’s founding.
Darling also wished Morris County residents a safe and happy Fourth of July and encouraged the public to participate in local Semiquincentennial events throughout the coming year honoring both the nation’s founding and Morris County’s role in American history.
