New Jersey among least affected by 2025 government shutdown, WalletHub study finds

NEW JERSEY — New Jersey ranks among the states least affected by the 2025 government shutdown, according to a new study by the personal-finance company WalletHub.

The study found that New Jersey is the seventh least affected state by the shutdown. With the U.S. government experiencing its 23rd funding lapse since 1976 — and its 11th actual shutdown, this time a partial one — WalletHub released its report on the States Most and Least Affected by the 2025 Government Shutdown to add data-driven context to the ongoing debate.

WalletHub compared all 50 states and the District of Columbia across five key metrics, including each state’s share of federal jobs, federal contract dollars per capita, and the percentage of families receiving food assistance.
