Newton police increase patrols, issue summonses amid quality-of-life concerns on County Green
NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Newton police say they have stepped up patrols on the County Green in response to rising quality-of-life concerns, issuing nearly 200 summonses over the past three months.
Although the Green is county-owned property and not under the direct control of the town or the police department, officers have increased their presence in the area. Police said their efforts led to 45 summonses in June, 66 in July and 74 as of Aug. 22 for violations of local and state laws.
The department said enforcement alone cannot solve the complex challenges of homelessness and noted that officers are working with Sussex County Social Services and local nonprofit organizations to connect individuals with resources and support programs.
Town Manager Thomas S. Russo Jr. praised the department while stressing the need for broader collaboration.
“I commend the men and women of the Newton Police Department for their dedication to protecting our community,” Russo said. “But enforcement alone will never be the full answer. Homelessness is a challenge faced across the country, and it requires both compassion and creativity. That’s why I’ve asked our Town Planner to review best practices from across New Jersey and the nation, while I continue to work with State and County agencies, local nonprofits, and leaders in other communities. Together, we’re committed to developing long-term approaches that are both humane and effective. My hope is that by working side by side, we can honor the dignity of every individual while preserving the safety and quality of life that our residents and visitors deserve. Newton can — and will — be part of the solution.”
Town officials also shared a list of local resources available for residents in need, including NJ 211, Manna House, Sussex County Division of Social Services, The Center for Prevention and Counseling, Family Promise of Sussex County, Project Self-Sufficiency, and Market Street Mission in Newton.
Officials said the town and police will continue working with county and community partners to ensure the Sussex County Green remains a safe, accessible and welcoming public space for everyone.
