Operation Lifesaver opens applications for rail transit safety education grants

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Operation Lifesaver Inc. has opened the application period for its Rail Transit Safety Education Grants program, making $140,000 available to support rail safety education and public awareness initiatives nationwide.

The competitive grant program is funded with support from the Federal Transit Administration and is intended to help transit agencies and government entities develop projects that promote safety around rail transit systems.

Eligible applicants include transit agencies and governmental entities that provide transit service. Individual grants are capped at $20,000 and require recipients to provide non-federal matching funds equal to at least 25% of project costs.

According to Operation Lifesaver, funded projects must focus on safety education or public awareness efforts in communities with existing or planned rail transit systems, including commuter rail, light rail, subways and streetcars.

The organization said all materials created through the grant program must receive approval from Operation Lifesaver and be developed in consultation with the applicable state Operation Lifesaver program.

The Federal Transit Administration supports the grant program as part of its broader efforts to improve rail safety and public awareness.

Applications must be submitted through the Common Grant Application online grant processing system by Aug. 1, 2026.

Operation Lifesaver said grant recipients will be announced no later than Sept. 30, 2026.

Additional information about eligibility requirements, deadlines and application procedures is available through Operation Lifesaver. Prospective applicants seeking further details may contact Wende Corcoran at wcorcoran@oli.org.
