Raritan Township reminds residents of “no-knock” list to block unwanted solicitors
RARITAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Raritan Township officials are reminding residents of their rights under the township’s existing “No-Knock” ordinance that allows them to block unwanted door-to-door solicitors.
The local law, detailed in Chapter 347-6 of the municipal code, lets residents register their home addresses on the township’s “No-Knock” List, which prevents licensed solicitors, vendors, and peddlers from visiting their homes.
Residents can sign up by filling out an online application that includes their name, address, and contact information. Only the address will be shared with solicitors, and only one registration is permitted per household.
Licensed solicitors receive the “No-Knock” List and are required to avoid those addresses. Residents who encounter solicitors ignoring the list are encouraged to report violations to the Raritan Township Police Department at (908) 782-8889.
Violators may be fined up to $2,000 and could face community service if they repeatedly violate the ordinance.
The ordinance requires anyone soliciting for commercial purposes to have a solicitor’s license issued by the Clerk’s Office and to display the license while soliciting.
Exemptions include religious and nonprofit organizations, political campaigners, honorably discharged veterans with a peddler’s license, volunteer firefighters, public utility workers with proper identification, and individuals offering snow shoveling services within 24 hours after a snowstorm.
