Sandyston honors veterans with hometown hero banner program

SANDYSTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — A growing banner program in Sandyston Township is recognizing local service members and veterans while inviting more residents to take part.

The Sandyston Hometown Hero Banner Program, created in 2024, pays tribute to active-duty military personnel and veterans who are either from Sandyston or currently live in the township.

Through the program, families can purchase 24-by-38-inch banners featuring a photo of the service member in uniform, along with their name and branch of service. The banners are displayed on lamp posts throughout the community, including along the sidewalk in Layton and at the municipal building parking lot.

Town officials said the program serves as a visible reminder of the sacrifices made by local service members.

To date, 55 banners have been installed, reflecting what officials described as strong community support and participation.

Organizers credited Gail Just-Cornelius and Jackie Webber for launching and continuing the program, as well as the township road department for installing and removing the banners each year.

Officials are encouraging additional veterans and active-duty service members connected to Sandyston to apply to have a banner displayed.

Applications and additional information are available through the township, and organizers said they welcome questions from interested participants.
