ShopRite launches annual Cheerios Contest to support local food banks

ShopRite Partners In Caring has kicked off its annual Cheerios Contest, a fundraiser that rallies store associates to raise money for local food banks in partnership with General Mills, the maker of Cheerios.

The contest, which runs through Oct. 4, pits ShopRite stores across the region against one another to see which can raise the most funds for organizations providing food assistance in their communities. Stores that come out on top will see their associates’ photos featured on a special Cheerios box in March, highlighting their commitment to fighting hunger.

Over the past 25 years, ShopRite Partners In Caring has raised nearly $65 million to support more than 2,500 local charities, making it the supermarket’s signature hunger-relief initiative.

“We are committed to fighting food insecurity because our stores are family-owned by grocers who are in the communities their stores operate. We are here and we care here. We are especially proud of the retail teams for their fundraising efforts and their commitment to the Cheerios contest each year,” said Alexandra Emery, Manager of Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility for ShopRite. “We want our customers to know we are here, and this contest is a meaningful way to bring people together and make a real difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity.”

This year’s Cheerios Contest comes as many families continue to face food insecurity. ShopRite officials said they hope the effort will inspire greater participation and generosity. Shoppers can support the cause through store fundraisers and by making donations to ShopRite Partners In Caring at checkout during the campaign, which also coincides with Hunger Action Month in September.
