Sussex County Sheriff’s Office promotes lieutenant, sergeant

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — The Sussex County Sheriff’s Office has announced the promotions of a lieutenant and sergeant within its Bureau of Law Enforcement.

Sheriff Michael F. Strada announced the promotion of Johnny Swords from sergeant to lieutenant and Michael Scott from detective to sergeant.

Swords, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served during Operation Iraqi Freedom, joined the sheriff’s office in 2007. During his career, he has served in the Courthouse Security and Prisoner Transportation Unit and the Sheriff’s Special Services Unit.

A certified fatal accident reconstructionist, Project Lifesaver technician and Law Enforcement Against Drugs instructor, Swords has supervised the Courthouse Security and Prisoner Transportation Unit since 2022. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Thomas A. Edison University.

Following his promotion, Swords will oversee the Courthouse Security and Prisoner Transportation Unit.

Scott, a 2004 graduate of Kittatinny Regional High School, began his law enforcement career with the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office in 2016.

He has served in the Courthouse Security and Prisoner Transportation Unit, the Sussex County Narcotics Task Force, the Sheriff’s Special Services Unit and the K-9 Unit. Scott is also a certified field training officer.

Following his promotion, Scott will serve as a supervisor in the Courthouse Security and Prisoner Transportation Unit.

“I want to extend my personal congratulations to both Lieutenant Johnny Swords and Sergeant Michael Scott on their well-deserved promotions. Both of these men have consistently demonstrated the highest levels of professionalism, leadership, and dedication to this office throughout their careers,” Sheriff Strada said.
