Vehicle theft attempt, car burglaries reported in Mansfield Township; police urge vigilance

MANSFIELD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Warren County) — Police are urging residents and visitors to lock their vehicles and keep valuables out of sight following a vehicle theft attempt and multiple car burglaries early Sunday morning.

According to Mansfield Township Police, the first incident occurred on July 27, between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., when an individual attempted to steal a vehicle in the ShopRite parking lot on Route 57. The suspect reportedly broke the passenger-side window to gain entry and tampered with the ignition lock. However, the attempt was unsuccessful, and the suspect fled the area on foot.

Later that morning, two individuals were observed breaking into several vehicles in the parking lot of Planet Fitness, also located on Route 57. Police said the suspects used stolen credit cards taken from the burglarized vehicles at nearby retailers, including Walmart and Staples.

Authorities are urging anyone who sees anything suspicious to contact the department’s dispatch center at 908-852-0003.
