Why buy when you can borrow? Sussex County Library’s ‘Library of Things’ lets you check out more than books
NEWTON, N.J. — The Sussex County Library System (SCLS) is spotlighting its growing Library of Things, a unique and expanding collection of non-traditional items available for checkout with a library card.
From VR headsets and car DVD players to sewing machines and croquet sets, the Library of Things offers a wide range of items that go beyond books. Each item can be borrowed for up to two weeks and reserved through the library’s online catalog.
“Why buy when you can borrow?” is the message from SCLS as it encourages patrons to take advantage of the collection. Whether planning a party, heading on a trip, or trying out a new hobby, the collection includes items like karaoke machines, fishing poles, bird-watching kits, gardening tools, and more.
The collection also includes helpful technology for seniors or caregivers, such as VHS-to-digital converters and memory kits. For families staying close to home, museum passes and telescopes are also available.
“The full Library of Things list includes yard games, musical instruments, household tools, tech devices, and more—offering both fun and function for library users of all ages,” the library said in a release.
SCLS invites patrons to browse the catalog and suggests that anyone who doesn’t see what they’re looking for should make a recommendation. Library cards are free to anyone who lives, works, or attends school in Sussex County, with the exception of Sparta.
