Wrong-way crash on I-80 in Passaic County kills two, injures woman and toddler

TOTOWA BOROUGH, N.J. (Passaic County) — Two people were killed and two others were injured early Monday after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 80 in Passaic County, according to New Jersey State Police.

State police said troopers responded at about 2:08 a.m. to a motor vehicle crash on I-80 westbound at milepost 54.1 in Totowa Borough.

A preliminary investigation determined that a Honda sedan, operated by Albin Fermin, 30, of Newark, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-80. A Buick SUV, driven by Joanne Furman, 60, of Norwich, Connecticut, was traveling westbound and carrying passengers Imani Alexis Furman, 24, and a 2-year-old child, also of Norwich.

The vehicles collided head-on near milepost 54.1, police said. Fermin and Imani Furman sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Joanne Furman sustained serious injuries, and the 2-year-old child suffered moderate injuries. Both were transported to an area hospital for treatment, police said.

The crash remains under investigation, and no additional information was immediately available, according to New Jersey State Police spokesman Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron.
