Hundreds attend Back-to-School Fair in Newton hosted by Project Self-Sufficiency
NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Hundreds of parents and children gathered in Newton for a Back-to-School Fair hosted by the Journey Family Success Center at Project Self-Sufficiency, organizers said.
The event, held Aug. 27, featured parenting workshops, children’s activities, resources from local social service agencies and healthcare organizations, live music, and free food. Families also received backpacks filled with school supplies to help prepare for the upcoming academic year.
Transportation was provided by Stocker Bus Company, and entertainment included performances by Mia Bonaldi, Rich Pell and students from the Meaningful Melodies vocal studio in Sparta. Children also toured the Sussex County Library System’s bookmobile, played in the Triple A Mobile Gaming Truck, and explored the Newton Volunteer First Aid & Rescue Squad ambulance.
“We are pleased to be able to help both parents and children to prepare for a successful school year at the annual Back-to-School Fair,” said Deborah Berry-Toon, executive director at Project Self-Sufficiency. “We commend all of the social service agencies, healthcare organizations, businesses, and volunteers who have taken the time to lend a helping hand to local families in need.”
In addition to children’s activities and dinner, parents attended a seminar on positive parenting techniques and learned about peer-to-peer support offered through a Parent Cafe.
Exhibitors included Atlantic Health System, the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey, the Center for Prevention & Counseling, the Sussex County YMCA, Zufall Health Center, and more than two dozen other organizations that provided information and interactive activities for families.
