CCM’s Longo Planetarium opens winter show schedule Jan. 23 with three programs under 33-foot dome

RANDOLPH TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — The Longo Planetarium at County College of Morris will launch a winter schedule of immersive shows beginning Friday, Jan. 23, offering audiences three 45-minute programs exploring astronomy, space science and the night sky.

The shows will be presented beneath the planetarium’s 33-foot-diameter dome and run through March 28. Tickets are $10 per person, and online reservations are strongly recommended because only a limited number of tickets will be available for cash purchase at the door, the college said.

Among the featured programs is “Cosmic Colors,” recommended for children 8 and older and adults. The show explores the electromagnetic spectrum and includes topics such as why the sky appears blue and Mars appears red, along with segments that tour the interior of a leaf, travel through the human eye and plunge into a black hole, the college said. “Cosmic Colors” will be shown on select Fridays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 2 p.m.

“Messengers of Time and Space,” recommended for adults and children 10 and older, focuses on how telescopes work together to capture fleeting events such as exploding stars, comets and passing asteroids — using light and other signals, the college said. The show will run on select Fridays at 9 p.m. and Saturdays at 3:30 p.m.

A third option, “Starlit Nights,” is a live, guided tour of the night sky led by CCM Planetarium Astronomer Kevin Conod that will feature stars, constellations, nebulas and star clusters. It will be offered on select Saturdays at 5 p.m.

For more information, including show trailers and tickets, the college said visitors can go to the Longo Planetarium page on CCM’s website. For weather-related closings, the college said to call (973) 328-5580. Questions may be emailed to planetariuminfo@ccm.edu.

The Longo Planetarium is located on the CCM campus at 214 Center Grove Road in Randolph, in Cohen Hall, Room 207, with parking available in Lot 7. No late entries will be permitted, the college said, to ensure the best show experience for all.
