Man charged with carjacking outside Hunterdon County post office
FLEMINGTON BOROUGH, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — A Hunterdon County man was arrested Monday and charged with carjacking after allegedly stealing a vehicle outside the Flemington post office and injuring the owner during a confrontation, authorities said.
Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renée M. Robeson said Zachary Verrastro, 36, of Asbury, was taken into custody following the incident on March 9, 2026.
Authorities said the victim had parked a Jeep Gladiator next to the U.S. Post Office on Capner Street, leaving the vehicle running with the keys inside while entering the building.
The victim later saw Verrastro driving away in the vehicle and chased him, prosecutors said. During the confrontation that followed, the victim was dragged by the vehicle and struck by Verrastro’s fists as the suspect continued to flee.
Authorities said Verrastro also damaged two other vehicles while fleeing, including an occupied moving vehicle and a parked vehicle.
A Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office detective intervened and detained Verrastro in front of the Hunterdon County Justice Center, authorities said.
Flemington Borough police charged Verrastro with first-degree carjacking, second-degree aggravated assault, fourth-degree assault by auto, two counts of third-degree criminal mischief and disorderly persons criminal mischief, according to officials.
Verrastro is being held at the Warren County Jail pending a March 10 court appearance in Central Judicial Processing court, prosecutors said.
