Harmful algae bloom advisory posted for Budd Lake
BUDD LAKE, N.J. (Morris County) — A harmful algae bloom advisory has been posted for Budd Lake after water samples collected by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection showed algae levels exceeding the state’s health advisory guidance levels.
The harmful algae bloom, also known as a HAB, was identified May 12, according to the NJDEP.
In response, the Mount Olive Township Health Department posted advisory notices at public access points around the lake warning residents and visitors to avoid primary contact with the water, including swimming.
Officials also advised caution during secondary recreational activities, including non-contact boating, and urged residents not to drink the water, allow pets or livestock to consume the water, or eat fish caught from the lake.
Health officials warned exposure to harmful algae blooms can potentially cause respiratory irritation, skin rashes, eye irritation and allergic reactions.
The township health department said the advisory does not reflect the overall water quality of Budd Lake and will remain in effect until testing confirms algae levels fall below New Jersey action levels.
The health department said it will continue visual inspections of the lake and is working with Aquatic Analysts Inc. and the NJDEP to monitor conditions and protect public health.
Additional information about harmful algae blooms is available through the NJDEP website.
