Hunterdon County officials deliver meals during Community Champions Week

HUNTERDON COUNTY, N.J. — Hunterdon County officials joined volunteers last week to deliver meals to homebound seniors as part of Meals on Wheels Community Champions Week, a nationwide effort to highlight services for older adults.

Commissioner Shaun Van Doren, County Clerk Mary Melfi and Sheriff Fred Brown participated in deliveries from March 23 through March 27, helping raise awareness of the program’s role in supporting seniors.

Van Doren, who serves as liaison to Human Services and Senior Services, delivered meals along routes in Flemington Borough and Raritan Township, where he met residents and observed the program’s impact firsthand.

“Meals on Wheels does more than provide a meal—it offers connection, care, and support to many of our seniors,” said Commissioner Van Doren. “It was a privilege to take part in this effort and see the positive impact these visits have on residents throughout our county.”

Melfi also took part in the initiative, emphasizing the importance of programs that help seniors remain connected to the community.

“It was truly rewarding to spend time delivering meals and checking in with residents,” said County Clerk Melfi. “Programs like Meals on Wheels play an essential role in helping seniors remain connected and supported within our community.”

Meals were distributed through the Hunterdon County Senior Center in Flemington and the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lebanon, with volunteers delivering to residents across the county.

Community Champions Week is a national campaign that recognizes the impact of Meals on Wheels programs and commemorates the 1972 amendment to the Older Americans Act, which established a national nutrition program for individuals age 60 and older.

Officials also acknowledged the contributions of volunteers and staff who support the program year-round.

“We are grateful to the Meals on Wheels team and volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure our seniors are cared for,” Van Doren said. “Their commitment makes a meaningful difference in the lives of so many across Hunterdon County.”
