Man charged with assault, spitting on police officer in Somerset County

RARITAN BOROUGH, NJ (Somerset County) – A Somerset County man has been charged with assault and spitting on a police officer in Raritan Borough, according to police.

On Friday, January 17, at around 1:12 p.m., officers responded to a residence on Canal Street after receiving a report of an intoxicated male. The individual was identified as Francisco Mendoza-Hernandez, 36, of Raritan, police said.

While officers were speaking with Hernandez through an open window, he attempted to punch one of the officers, who was able to block the punch. Hernandez was subsequently removed from the residence through the window and placed under arrest. As officers were escorting him to a patrol vehicle, Hernandez allegedly spat on one of the officers, police said.

Hernandez was charged with simple assault and throwing bodily fluids at a law enforcement officer. He was lodged in the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing, police said.
