Man sentenced for eluding police in Sussex County

NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – A man was sentenced for eluding police in Sussex County, according to Acting Sussex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray.

Peter Montanaro, 42, of Sussex, was sentenced on March 8 before the Honorable Michael C. Gaus, J.S.C. at the Sussex County Courthouse in Newton, Murray said.

Montanaro was sentenced to 3 years probation and in addition to the standard terms of probation, he must serve 180 days in the Morris County Correctional Facility, forfeit his motorcycle, 6 months loss of license and fines and fees, Murray said.

Montanaro pled guilty on Jan. 3 to third-degree eluding and in pleading guilty, he admitted to knowingly fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer while operating a motorcycle on a street of highway after receiving a signal from the officer to bring the vehicle to a full stop, Murray said.

At sentencing, Montanaro was represented by John M. Breslin, Esq., and the State was represented by Special Deputy Attorney General and Acting Supervising Assistant Prosecutor Brent M. Rafuse.
