Washington Township police warn residents about toll violation text scam

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Warren County) — Police in Washington Township are warning residents about a scam involving text messages that falsely claim recipients owe money for a municipal court toll violation.

According to the Washington Township Police Department, several residents recently reported receiving messages stating they had a toll-related violation connected to municipal court.

The text message includes a link directing recipients to view the alleged violation and instructs them to scan a QR code to pay the fine instead of appearing in court.

Police said the message is fraudulent.

Authorities reminded residents to be cautious when receiving unexpected text messages, particularly those that contain links or request payment.

Officials noted that government agencies and courts do not request payment through unsolicited text messages or QR codes.

Police advise anyone who receives a similar message not to click the link or scan the QR code and instead delete the message.

Residents are also encouraged to remain alert and report suspicious activity to their local police department.
