Man charged in Somerset County stabbing, police pursuit
MONTGOMERY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Somerset County) — A North Carolina man is facing multiple charges after allegedly stabbing a man in Montgomery Township and leading police on a pursuit through multiple towns on June 16, Somerset County authorities said.
According to Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald, police responded around 1:32 p.m. to Willow Run Lane for a report of a man suffering from stab wounds. The victim, a Montgomery Township resident, sustained stab wounds to the shoulder and abdomen, underwent emergency surgery, and is expected to survive.
Witnesses provided dispatchers with a description of a red SUV fleeing the area. Montgomery Township police located the vehicle on County Route 533, but the driver refused to stop, prompting a pursuit through Montgomery, Princeton, and South Brunswick. The suspect’s vehicle struck a Montgomery police car during the chase, though no officers were injured.
The driver, identified as Brian Pyke, 65, of Calabash, North Carolina, was eventually stopped and arrested in South Brunswick. He was treated for minor injuries before being transported to police headquarters for processing.
Pyke was charged with second-degree aggravated assault, second-degree eluding, and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was lodged in the Somerset County Jail pending a court hearing.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing, though there is no threat to the community. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit at (908) 231-7100 or the Montgomery Township Police Department at (908) 359-3222.
